Lifting Tongs
Bushman AvonTec designs and manufactures a complete line of tongs for lifting and moving a wide range of industrial loads. We design each tong grab for the size, shape and weight and special conditions in your particular application.
Bushman AvonTec lifting tongs are designed and manufactured according to the latest revisions of ASME Specifications B30.20 and BTH-1, Design of Below-the-Hook Lifting Devices.
There are three basic tong configurations and application concepts:
| Supporting Tong | Gripping Tong | Pressure Tong | ||
|
|
|
|
||
|
For single-size objects that have support clearance underneath, such as boxes, crates, bins and containers. The lifting feet of the tong support the load and maintain it on a horizontal lifting plane. |
For materials such as ingots, rolls, tubes, pipes and other round or cylindrical objects. The tong grab extends beyond and below the center of the load to provide additional support. The diameter of the load may vary by approximately 25%, but the variation in length is generally unlimited. |
For gripping the vertical sides of slabs, bales, boxes, billets and other flat or round objects. Pads on pressure tongs provide surface friction or penetration of the load to maintain a safe hold during handling. Pads can come with rubber, belting, pins, points, serrated bits and other materials, depending on the coefficient of friction required for the load. |
Automatic Latching Device for Bushman AvonTec Tong Grabs

Each tong is equipped with the Bushman AvonTec automatic latching device that provides safe and reliable operation of the clamping mechanism. To operate the latch:
With the lift open, position the tong over the load.
Lower the tong onto the load. With the lifting tong resting on the load, and hoist tension released, the latch automatically disengages from the locked open position.
Raise the hoist to allow the tong pads to close onto load. Then lift and move the load to the desired location.
To release the load, lower the tong grab and place the load on the ground to relieve tension. The latch will automatically lock the tong in the open position. Then raise the hoist to remove the tong.
Model 1503 Single Slab Tong

The model 1503 slab tong is a mill duty lifter designed to handle loads in a wide range of widths. Various gripping pads, including steel points and serrated pads, are available. This tong uses a Bushman AvonTec mechanical latch for easy engagement and disengagement of the load.

A major US integrated steel mill uses this 50 ton capacity Model 1503 slab tong to lift and transport slabs 22 to 76 inches wide.

Custom designed slab tong for use with cold or hot slabs. Single or duplex slab tongs can be designed with automatic latching or winch operated and can have custom gripping shoes to suit your specific needs. These units can be designed to pick up single or multiple slabs. We will design to match your crane connections.

This tong is a mill duty lifter with a capacity of 35 metric tons. It can handle a wide range of roll diameters, eliminating the necessity for multiple lifters. It has an automatic latch for easy engagement and disengagement of rolls. Pads are available with a variety of liners to accommodate the specific application.
Model 1529 Mill Roll Tong

This Model 1529 mill roll tong, built for a major steel company, has a capacity of 98,000 pounds.

These Model 1529 mill roll tongs handle a range of round steel ingots. The ingots are 12 to 40 inches in diameter and weigh up to 50,000 pounds.
Model M2055 Motorized Lay Down Ingot Tong

This special mill duty ingot tong (or ingot lifter) lifts ingots from a vertical position and lays them down horizontally. The lifter legs have rotating pads mounted on an inclined plane to increase gripping pressure. A cam behind the pads provides locking to protect the load.
Model 6103 Pressure Tong

This Bushman AvonTec pressure tong holds aluminum scrap blocks. It will also handle bales, boxes, ingots and other flat or straight-sided objects. Pads provide surface friction or penetration of the load to maintain a safe hold during handling. The pads can come with rubber, belting, pins, or points depending on the coefficient of friction required for the load.
Vertical Cylinder Tong

In addition to the cylinder of bottled gas shown here, these pressure tongs can handle materials such as ingots, rolls, tubes and other round or cylindrical objects. These tongs can handle loads of differing lengths.
Model 1029 Tong Grab

This Model 1029 pressure tong lifts packages of ceiling tiles.

Paper Roll Clamp - This paper roll lifter, used by a major paper mill, is also a pressure tong.
Model 1080-F Bale Tong

Model 1080-F bale tongs lift bales of paper, metal shavings, cotton, foam and related materials.
Model 1543 Bar and Pipe Tong
The model 1543 tong is used to handle individual lengths of bar and pipe that have different diameters.
Custom Designed Tongs

This tong is used with spreader bars to pick up finishing rolls and put them in a grinder.
